Caring for Lyocell/Tencel Garments
Lyocell (also known as Tencel) is a soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking fabric made from sustainably sourced wood pulp. While it is more durable than silk and softer than cotton, it requires gentle care to maintain its smooth texture and drape.
Airing
To refresh your Lyocell/Tencel garments, simply hang them in fresh air to help eliminate odors such as smoke or sweat. A damp bathroom after a shower works well, as the humidity can help relax wrinkles and restore the fabric's natural softness.
Resting
Like all natural fibers, Lyocell/Tencel benefits from rest between wears. This allows the fabric to maintain its structure and prevents premature wear. Always store garments in a well-ventilated space to avoid trapping moisture.
Storage
Lyocell/Tencel fabrics are prone to creasing, so it’s best to store garments on padded or shaped hangers to help them retain their shape. Avoid hanging them in direct sunlight for long periods, as excessive exposure may cause fading.
Washing and Stains
Lyocell/Tencel is highly absorbent, meaning stains should be treated immediately to prevent setting. Blot stains gently with a damp cloth—avoid rubbing, as this will leave marks on fabric surface.
If washing is necessary, follow these steps:
- Use a delicate or hand wash cycle with cold water and plenty of water to prevent friction.
- Choose a wool/silk detergent free of harsh enzymes or bleach, as strong chemicals can weaken the fibers.
- Avoid using fabric softeners, as Lyocell/Tencel naturally remains soft and breathable.
After washing, reshape the garment and lay it flat to dry. Do not wring or twist, as this will cause stretching.
Ironing & Steaming
Lyocell/Tencel wrinkles easily but responds well to steaming. If needed, iron at a low temperature using a protective cloth between the fabric and the iron to prevent shine marks. Avoid applying direct heat to the surface as this may leave marks on fabric.
Freezing
For a natural refresh between wears, place your Lyocell/Tencel garment in a sealed bag and freeze it for a few hours. This can help eliminate bacteria and odors without the need for frequent washing.
By following these care tips, your Lyocell/Tencel garments will stay soft, smooth, and long-lasting while maintaining their sustainable qualities.
